Aragon demands immediate enforcement of the ruling on the Sijena murals

Aragon demands immediate enforcement of the ruling on the Sijena murals
"It will be fulfilled by fair means or foul," says the community president, Jorge Azcón.

The Government of Aragon has announced that it will immediately request the enforcement of the Supreme Court ruling ordering the return of the mural paintings from the Monastery of Sijena , currently on display at the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC). This was confirmed on Tuesday by the Aragonese president, Jorge Azcón, who insisted that the court ruling will be enforced "by fair means or foul."

In statements to the press, Azcón accused the institutions that form part of the MNAC's board of trustees—the Generalitat of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, and the Ministry of Culture—of acting disloyally and trying to "deceive" Aragon by filing an enforcement motion that, in his opinion, seeks to delay compliance with the court ruling .

For its part, the MNAC has sent a letter to the Court of First Instance No. 2 of Huesca, alleging the "impossibility" of moving the paintings without compromising their integrity . The museum maintains that the operation cannot be carried out within the 20-day period established by law, applying the most demanding technical standards.

The regional government has categorically rejected these arguments and considers it "unacceptable" to attempt to halt the transfer on technical grounds . In response to this position, Aragon has decided to withdraw its technicians from the working group created to coordinate the restitution of the works.

The request for compulsory execution will be submitted to the Huesca court once the legal deadline for voluntary compliance expires, which ends this week. The Aragonese president has stated that he expects full cooperation from those responsible for the MNAC so that the paintings can be returned "as soon as possible" to their original location in the Monastery of Sijena.

"The most important thing is that the paintings are not harmed in any way. They are part of Aragonese heritage, and we will not allow political interests to block compliance with a final judgment," Azcón stated.
