Pompeii is an ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is a popular tourist attraction. Despite the natural disaster, frescoes, an amphitheater, and luxuriously decorated baths have been preserved.
In ancient Rome , roads connecting cities were often lined with tombs. In Pompeii , tributes to the dead were also paid along these roads. Recently, a monumental tomb crowned by life-size sculptures of a man and a woman was discovered on the outskirts of the city.
The tomb found is a large wall with several niches in which cremated remains were most likely placed. At the top of the wall are the figures of a man and a woman standing side by side.

The woman's figure is 1.77 meters tall , and the man's is 1.75 meters tall. She wears a tunic, a cloak, and a veil, and wears a crescent-shaped pendant. The man wears a Roman toga.
Archaeologists speculate that, since they are depicted in the same tomb, they could be husband and wife. She is carrying a laurel branch, a common object for priestesses, who held great status in ancient Rome. But since there is no inscription detailing their relationship, nothing is known about their identity.
