Elvis Crespo: "'Suavemente' was a hit like Bad Bunny. I went crazy. Five children with five women."

Elvis Crespo , one of the great exponents of merengue, has confessed on the Mundo Rueditas podcast the excesses and mistakes that marked his life after the worldwide success of “ Suavemente ,” a song he released when he was just 25 years old and which he himself compares to the Bad Bunny phenomenon . “Suavemente was like Bad Bunny, something like that. It was a success,” he acknowledged nostalgically.

The singer explained that the impact of his biggest hit led him to lose control of his life . “All of that went to my head, I went crazy,” he admitted bluntly. Among those consequences, he revealed that he had five children with five different women. “I got my secretary pregnant, another one pregnant… I went crazy, crazy, crazy,” he recounted, highlighting the personal chaos he had fallen into.

Between whiskey and self-destruction

Crespo confessed that his excesses weren't limited to the emotional: he also abused alcohol and other addictions . "I'm electric by nature, but imagine with whiskey. It was erratic behavior that hurt me a lot , threw me off focus, and damaged my self-esteem ," he explained about that period.

Although he later released other hit songs like Píntame , which won him a Grammy , the singer admits he was obsessed with repeating the "Suavemente" phenomenon . "I got it into my head that I had to find another 'Suavemente,' but that's not your decision, that's God's decision ," he asserted.

Today, with a different perspective, Crespo acknowledges his mistakes and affirms that he is in a continuous process of growth. “I learned from my mistakes, understanding what life is like. I'm not perfect, but I'm not where I was either. One day at a time, I began to rediscover myself,” he reflected.

Twenty-five years after its release, the song continues to be heard at parties around the world and remains one of the most iconic pieces of Latin music . Crespo knows this and is grateful for it, although he admits that this same masterpiece was also what pushed him into his darkest period .
