Steven Van Zandt underwent emergency appendicitis surgery after his concert at Anoeta.

Steven Van Zandt underwent emergency appendicitis surgery after his concert at Anoeta.

Steven Van Zandt will not be able to perform at upcoming concerts with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band after undergoing emergency appendicitis surgery in San Sebastian following a concert in the Spanish city.

The guitarist shared the news on social media Monday night: "I had a sharp pain in my stomach. I thought it was food poisoning, but it turned out to be appendicitis. I was lucky to have an exceptional hospital in San Sebastián. The operation was a complete success, and I hope to be back on stage for at least one of the Milan shows. Thanks to everyone for the good vibes. See you soon," he wrote on social media.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are currently on a European stadium tour, and after their second show at Anoeta Stadium on Tuesday, June 24, their next scheduled stop is Gelsenkirchen, Germany , on June 27. On June 30 and July 3, the band will perform back-to-back shows at Milan ’s San Siro Stadium, but it has yet to be announced who will replace Van Zandt during his recovery.

It's been a busy tour in terms of media coverage, as Springsteen is making statements against Donald Trump, earning the president's ire. During his second concert in Manchester , England, in May, the rocker gave a three-minute speech in which he criticized "an incapable president and a rogue government."

"Things are happening right now that are altering the very nature of our country's democracy, and they are too important to ignore," Springsteen said, echoing much of his message from the previous concert. "In America, my homeland, people are being persecuted for their right to free speech and to express their disagreement. That is happening now."

He did the same at the beginning of the concert in San Sebastián this Saturday, when he told his 40,000 spectators : "Good evening, San Sebastián. The mighty E St. Band is here tonight to invoke the full power of art, music, and rock and roll in these perilous times. The United States that I love, that I have sung about, and that has been a beacon of hope and freedom for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and traitorous administration. Tonight, we ask all of you who believe in democracy and in the best of our American experiment to rise up with us, raise your voices, and join us against authoritarianism. And let freedom redouble!"
