The story of Peter Bergmann is one of the greatest enigmas for authorities and the media in Ireland, because the man took it upon himself to erase all traces of his past before dying under mysterious circumstances.
According to witness accounts, in June 2009, a thin, friendly-looking man dressed in black was seen on a bus bound for the coastal town of Sligo, where he stayed for three days.

According to local residents, the suspect arrived at a station around 6:00 p.m., left, and took a taxi to the city center, leading police to speculate that Bergmann was unfamiliar with the area, as the distances are typically very short.
Another detail that has caught the attention of investigators for years is that the man was carrying two bags in his hands, looking for a place to stay , so he booked a room at the Sligo City Hotel.
Hotel officials confirmed that the tourist had made a three-night reservation and decided to pay in advance. They also noted that he had entered an address in Vienna, Austria, in his check-in book.
Some employees also mentioned that no incidents occurred during the weekend he was at the facility, and that while Bergmann's behavior was distant, all he did was wander around nearby areas.

Irish police have determined that the day after his arrival, the suspect left the hotel, hailed a taxi, and asked the driver to take him to the city's less-crowded beach for a relaxing swim.
After 15 minutes of driving, the tourist arrived at Roses Point , got out of the vehicle, appreciated the landscape for a while and instead of staying, returned to the car to return to the place where he was staying.
Twenty-four hours later, the man handed his keys to the hotel reception desk and, without taking any of his belongings, left the hotel and headed for a bus station. During the journey, the suspect was captured on a shopping center's security camera , where he appeared agitated before resuming his journey.

The last time Bergmann was seen alive was on a beach, where about 16 people confirmed they didn't notice anything unusual. The next morning, a local resident and his son found the tourist's body.
After reporting the discovery, forensic experts discovered that the man had died from drowning, but that his body showed advanced prostate cancer and several bone tumors . They also indicated in the reports that he was missing a kidney and had apparently suffered several heart attacks.
While authorities were able to gather information about his final days in Sligo, they realized that the information he provided about his residence in Austria didn't match, nor did his identity.
