Croatian swimmer Vitomir Maričić set a new world record by holding his breath underwater for 29 minutes and 3 seconds , proving that the human body has untapped capabilities.

However, to be able to accomplish this incredible feat, the freediver dedicated several years of his life to training that would allow him to develop the ability to tolerate hypoxia (low oxygen levels) and hyperoxia (high oxygen levels).

The athlete's goal was to test his own mental and physiological limits to beat the time of his compatriot, Budimir Šobat, who in 2021 managed to last 24 minutes underwater while holding his breath.

To that end, Vitomir decided to undergo special training that consisted of combining cardiovascular exercises such as swimming, jogging, and cycling with diaphragmatic breathing techniques.

The purpose of his routine was to increase the capacity of his lungs so that his organs would gradually become accustomed to storing a greater amount of oxygen within the body.

Another aspect worth highlighting is that the athlete not only worked on his physical condition, but also on his psychological state, developing the strength to manage anxiety and fear.

For the Croatian to face the greatest challenge of his life, he needed a three-meter-deep pool. Standing on the shore, Vitomir inhaled pure oxygen for 10 minutes and then entered the water.

This technique allowed him to start with greater reserves than a human taking a normal breath. Furthermore, being completely submerged, the freediver chose to remain motionless at the bottom of the structure.

“Mentally, I knew I wasn't going to give up,” the athlete said, referring to the fact that concentration is key, since the most difficult part of his discipline is the diaphragm contractions.

Despite the risks involved in freediving, Vitomir managed to surpass his compatriot's record and raise the Guinness World Records record for freediving, challenging his own body's capabilities.
