Why Amélie Nothomb will (probably) never win the Goncourt Prize

The Belgian novelist returns this fall with "Tant mieux," a wonderful story dedicated to her mother, in bookstores Wednesday. One of her finest vintages. And yet, this time again, the prestigious prize is likely to elude her.
By Sandrine BajosShe herself told us four years ago: "Let's be clear, I will never win the Goncourt. " It was at the release of "Premier Sang," a masterful story dedicated to her father who died during Covid. While Amélie Nothomb opens this literary season with an equally powerful text, "Tant mieux," this time in tribute to her mother and in bookstores this Wednesday, August 20, the verdict seems final in the small literary world: the Belgian novelist will not win the Grail.
The same industry that, according to summer reviews, is already hailing an excellent vintage. The same goes for Le Parisien, where we ranked it among our favorites. It would have a rightful place on the famous list of fifteen shortlisted for the Goncourt, which will be unveiled on September 3.
