Sapri celebrates Carlo Pisacane: three days of history, theater, and remembrance in the name of the Risorgimento.

Sapri celebrates Carlo Pisacane: three days of history, theater, and remembrance in the name of the Risorgimento.

On the anniversary of his birth, August 22, 1818, in Naples, celebrations dedicated to Carlo Pisacane, revolutionary, patriot, and libertarian thinker, begin in Sapri. Each year, the Municipality of Sapri and the Carlo Pisacane Study and Documentation Center renew their commitment to ensure that the memory of the 1857 landing never fades into a fading memory.

This year too, with the same punctuality as always, the initiatives start from the date that marked the birth of Pisacane, a complex and eclectic figure of the Risorgimento, who went down in history above all for the Sapri expedition, immortalised in the famous verses of Luigi Mercantini: “there were three hundred of them, they were young and strong, and they died”.

The first day of events opens today, August 22, at 7:00 PM with “Pisacane: History on the Move,” an urban trek led by Ambra Scarpitta through the city's iconic sites linked to the Risorgimento.

At 10:00 PM, the Villa Comunale becomes the center of the reenactment with "The Night Before the Landing": scenes from everyday life, readings, and novels evoke the anticipation and tension of those hours. During the evening, the book "Pisacane da Sapri a Sanza" by Cesare Pifano will also be presented, with greetings from Mayor Antonio Gentile and a discussion with school principal Corrado Limongi. (In case of rain, the event will be held in the Sapri City Council Chamber.)

The events will continue until August 24th with the program "Traces of Revolutions in the Bussento Region – Beyond Pisacane," funded by the European Union through the European Social Fund (Campania Regional Operational Programme ESF 2014-2020). Three days of history, theater, music, and institutional ceremonies will keep alive the memory of the Risorgimento hero and his message.
