The Pirandello Theatre's New Season: Roberta Torre Leads the 2025/2026 Program
Agrigento's Teatro Pirandello officially launched its 2025/2026 season with a presentation featuring its new artistic director , director Roberta Torre . With infectious enthusiasm and a passion for Sicily , Torre arrived in the City of Temples with the promise of a new direction that will unite theater and cinema in a creative and innovative embrace.
Arriving in Agrigento with great joy, Torre emphasized the importance of working in the city that is this year's Italian Capital of Culture . Her artistic direction marks a moment of renewal, a challenge accepted with a positive spirit, as the director herself stated: " It is a great joy for me to return to work in Sicily, a land that has always fascinated me. Agrigento is a city that can be a Capital of Culture tout court , thanks to its extraordinary history and heritage. Pirandello is a tutelary deity who is still too little appreciated in Italy."
The new season's program, created in collaboration with his predecessor Francesco Bellomo , is packed with new features. It begins on November 15th and 16th with a mysterious, still-secret performance, and continues on November 27th and 28th with Massimo Ghini and Paola Tiziana Cruciani in "The Widower," a comedy based on the film by Dino Risi . In December, on December 10th and 11th , the musical "Christmas Carol" will pay homage to Charles Dickens 's famous story, while in the new year, on January 13th and 14th , Marisa Laurito and Enzo Gragnaniello will perform "Vasame – Love is Revolutionary."
The month of January will also see the staging of Shakespeare 's Othello , in the version directed by Giorgio Pasotti , with dramaturgy by Dacia Maraini . In February , on the 18th and 19th , it will be the turn of Neil Simon 's “The Irresistible Boys,” directed by Massimo Popolizio , and in March , on the 7th and 8th , the opera “Elizabeth's Bodies” by British playwright Ella Hickson will be coming to Italy for the first time.
Following this, on March 21st and 22nd , Amanda Sandrelli will star in “Vicini di casa,” a theatrical discussion of sexuality and relationships. The season will continue with a tribute to Pirandello on April 18th and 19th , with “Il piacere dell'onestà,” and on May 9th and 10th , the return of Gianfranco Jannuzzo with “Fata Morgana,” a new opera featuring the musical collaboration of Francesco Buzzurro .
Finally, in June , the season will close with a non-subscription show: “The Rite of the Lord of the Ship” by Pirandello , with Giampiero Ingrassia .
In addition to the traditional season, Roberta Torre has introduced special projects that intertwine the worlds of cinema and theater . These include the "Passo a due" series, which will offer films that explore theater and a series of meetings with directors and actors, including Paolo Taviani , Mario Martone , and Michele Placido . The "Pirandello Fringe Fest" will also be present, involving the Agrigento University Center and giving space to new generations of artists hungry for culture.
Roberta Torre concluded her speech with a clear and inspiring message: “The goal is to open spaces for culture , to create opportunities and networks between different artistic realities. I hope that my direction can inspire the new generations, those in their twenties and thirties, who are hungry to do, see, and imagine. The Teatro Pirandello must become a central hub for cultural aggregation , a meeting place for theater, music, cinema, and literature.”
With such a rich and varied season, the Teatro Pirandello confirms its position as a point of reference for culture in Sicily , ready to welcome and stimulate the public with innovative and increasingly inclusive proposals.
