American language academies support Muñoz Machado and avoid referring to the Cervantes Institute in an official statement.

American language academies support Muñoz Machado and avoid referring to the Cervantes Institute in an official statement.

The directors of the 22 Spanish language academies that accompany the RAE in the Asale association (21 in the Americas and the one in Equatorial Guinea) have issued a statement of support for Santiago Muñoz Machado , their Spanish colleague, on the last day of the International Congress on the Language being held this week in Arequipa, Peru.

The academies' text is a courtesy text that celebrates the work done in Arequipa. It does not explicitly refer to the conflict between the directors of the RAE and the Cervantes Institute, and avoids naming Luis García Montero and the institute of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, co-organizer of the Congress. But its fifth section is unavoidable.

"ASALE wishes to especially acknowledge the strong intellectual and cultural leadership of our president, the director of the RAE, Santiago Muñoz Machado, who is driving our organization and joint work with a wide variety of enriching and innovative pan-Hispanic initiatives . ASALE unanimously supports his initiative and shares his program of action, both at the institutional level and in the numerous projects we jointly develop to serve the needs of Spanish speakers around the world in these complex times," the association of academies states in its statement.

In the preceding paragraphs, the text expresses its "immense gratitude for the presence of His Majesty the King of Spain," describes the collaboration of the Government of Peru and the Peruvian Academy of Language as "perfect and effective," and "expresses its satisfaction with the work that has been carried out."

There's more: Santiago Muñoz Machado also appears named in another point of the statement: "The president and director of the Royal Spanish Academy, Santiago Muñoz Machado, has declined to attend the meeting , given the content of the deliberations and the agreement adopted . The secretary general of ASALE, Mr. Francisco Javier Pérez, will participate in the plenary session."

Last Wednesday, there was another show of support for Muñoz Machado: the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences unanimously agreed to "express its support for the statement issued by the Royal Spanish Academy regarding the management of its Director, Mr. Santiago Muñoz Machado, also a member of our Corporation, in response to the unjustified and misplaced criticism he has received in recent days."

The two statements refer to the attacks Luis García Montero directed at Muñoz Machado, first in Madrid last week, and then in Arequipa, during a formal ceremony before Peruvian authorities.
