MEXICO CITY (apro) .- After the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that she will send an initiative to prosecute the crime of extortion, the coordinator of the Political Coordination Board (Jucupo) of the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal, stated that the proposal will be discussed in the next ordinary period and that it will be one of the priorities.

In a press conference, the Morena legislator explained that the purpose of the initiative is to amend Section 21 of Article 73 to empower the Congress of the Union to enact a general anti-extortion law.

"The timing is right. If it reaches the House, I'm going to ask the chairman of the Justice Committee to get it started. Although it's a constitutional reform, it could end up before the Constitutional Affairs Committee or the Justice Committee, but either committee should start its work and gather the essential elements. What's the timing? September. The extortion law would be our priority," he noted.

"So, this initiative, which we have discussed for the third time, establishes that extortion will not depend on the voluntary act of the victim, but will be automatically prosecuted by the state."

Ricardo Monreal emphasized that the reform will be discussed and, if appropriate, approved that same month, as it is an initiative on which several opposition legislators have expressed interest in legislating, for the benefit of the population.
