The 2025 Met Gala seeks to highlight Black dandyism, a cultural and aesthetic phenomenon that originated in 19th-century Britain and was later adopted by African-American communities in the United States.

Its most notable development took place during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s , when this style became a form of expression that challenged the norms imposed by an exclusionary society.

Black dandyism uses clothing as a statement of autonomy. Rather than being limited to the realm of the visual, this approach represents a deliberate act of self-affirmation.

The carefully selected and crafted garments symbolize the right to exist with dignity, in a context that has historically attempted to restrict the full participation of Black people in public spaces.
