For Sergio Fong, writing not only builds books, it also opens doors, breaks silences, and, in many cases, liberates.

Sergio Fong explains how to make a cardboard book with easy-to-find materials. 1. Cardboard collection: Collect recycled cardboard.
Cut it into half a letter (approximate size of the tapas).

2. Die cuts or folds: Mark a 1.5 cm. eyebrow on one side of the cardboard with a ruler and the back of a cutter (do not cut). Fold along that line so that the cardboard can be opened like a lid.

3. Preparing the endpapers: Use letter-sized sheets, also split in half. These sheets will be the endpapers: they go at the beginning and end of the book's content.

4. Prepare the contents: Insert the inner sheets, preferably recycled paper. Place the endpapers at the front and end of the block of sheets.

5. Temporary assembly: Use clips to hold the covers, endpapers, and inner pages together.

6. Perforations: Make five perforations along the spine.
You can use a drill, but a thick needle, awl, nail, or ice pick will also work.

7. Stitching the spine: Use a yarn needle and nylon thread.
Baste back and forth, and on the way back, reinforce the stitching, as if you were making a hem.

8. Final gluing: Apply gummed paper tape (activated with water) over the sewn spine.
This reinforces and fixes all parts of the book well.

Through the handcrafted creation of books using cardboard and recycled materials, Sergio FONG seeks to build community, creating spaces where writing is a way of resisting and healing.
