These are the Catalan-produced films you can't miss in 2025.

Last year was a record-breaking year for Catalan cinema. There were more films, investment in new productions increased, audience attendance also increased, and, if that weren't enough, box office takings doubled, reaching €23.5 million, thanks to such successful films as The House on Fire and The 47 .

The industry hopes this season will perform as well, if not better. To get things moving, the Catalan Film Academy held a welcome party last night at Les Tres Ximeneies for new productions that will be released (or have already been released) in 2025.

The event was attended by Belén Funes, Laura Mañà, Laia Marull, Sandra Tàpia, Celia Rico, Tono Folguera, Ivan Morales, Lluís Homar, Carol Rodríguez, Maria Zamora and many other actors, directors and producers who will present their new films throughout the year and who dream of being nominated at the next Acadèmia festival, the Gaudí awards ceremony held every January to recognize the best films of the season.

There could be many candidates. Last night's party hosted the teams of several productions that have already made it to the big screen, such as Sorda , Eva Libertad's debut feature, which tells the story of a woman with a hearing impairment adapting to motherhood. Sorda is already on the right track, having won the Audience Award at the Berlinale and the Golden Biznaga at the Malaga Film Festival.

Avelina Prat's A Portuguese Villa has become one of the season's breakout films. Word of mouth has brought audiences to the theaters to learn the story of a man in a funk who starts a new life with a new name and a new job far from home.

And Lluny de casa is the title of Gerard Oms' debut feature, a film starring Mario Casas and shot in Holland that tells the story of a young man's journey to accept his sexual orientation. Also doing well at the box office is Javier Ruiz Caldera's tender Wolfgang (Extraordinari) , in which Miki Esparbé takes on the role of a gifted son she barely knows.

The Tres Ximeneies also hosted the teams from Los tortuga , the story of immigration and homelessness by Belén Funes; La furia , a terrifying rape story by Gemma Blasco starring Ángela Cervantes; La buena letra , Celia Rico's adaptation of Rafael Chirbes' novel of the same name; and the much-vaunted Sirat , by Oliver Laxe, which returned from Cannes with an award.

A total of 3.7 million viewers watched Catalan films on the big screen in 2024.

The event was attended by representatives of other films that have not yet been released, such as the eagerly awaited Romería by Carla Simón, the documentaries by Félix Colomer, El negre té nom , which reveals the true identity of the Negro de Banyoles, and Temps mort , which delves into the mysterious story of 80s basketball star Charles Thomas.

During the celebration, the results of the Report on Film Production in Catalonia 2025 were announced. This report, prepared by the Audiovisual Production Observatory of the Pompeu Fabra University based on data compiled by Carlos José Solsona, contains good news for Catalan cinema.

The study reveals that production broke records in 2024, with 114 films rated with the participation of Catalan producers, representing a 27% increase. "This increase reaffirms Catalonia's prominent role in overall Spanish film production."

Furthermore, Catalan productions are increasingly elaborate, expensive, and competitive. Last year, 18 titles were produced, costing between three and five million euros, which is triple the figure for 2023, a year in which only six films with such high budgets were produced.

Much of this increase has been due to the investment of public institutions, which have stepped up their efforts and invested heavily in Catalan cinema. The Catalan Audiovisual Corporation (CCMA) increased its investment in the sector by 53%, the Catalan Institute of Cultural Enterprises (ICEC) allocated 30% more resources to film, and the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) increased its investment by 17%.

But on the other side of talent are the audiences, and the great news for Catalan cinema is that audiences went to the movies in 2024. Catalan theaters attracted 3.7 million people, a 67% increase compared to the previous year. The audience turnout was reflected in the box office, which grossed €23.5 million, 92% more than in 2024.

Anna Cornudella won the Pepón Coromina Award for 'The Human Hibernation'

Catalan films accounted for 35% of Spanish cinema viewers, although most opted for the same titles. In fact, 53% of Catalan film audiences opted for the three most successful films of the year: Buffalo Kids , El 47 , and Casa en flames , according to the report.
