MEXICO CITY (apro).- Through social media, users shared videos of the 4.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Nuevo León this Sunday, May 11.

The earthquake struck at 7:29 p.m., with its epicenter 18 kilometers northeast of the municipality of Montemorelos, the National Seismological Service (SSN) reported.

According to Governor Samuel García, various municipal and state agencies conducted patrols to determine any damage caused by the earthquake; no serious damage or injuries were reported.

The state Civil Protection (PC) reported that the earthquake was felt in the following municipalities:

Initial reports indicated cracks in a home located on Ébano Street, between Cuauhtémoc and Simón Bolívar, in downtown Montemorelos.

The building was no longer inhabited, but its main facade was damaged by the earthquake and is located near a pedestrian crossing. Police officers cordoned it off, considering it a risk to pedestrians.

State authorities continue to inspect the area and a report is awaited. They also called on the public to remain calm and follow official recommendations in the event of possible aftershocks.

Second earthquake in Montemorelos

The National Seismological Service (SSN) confirmed another earthquake in the municipality of Montemorelos, Nuevo León. The second tremor occurred at 9:33 p.m. on Sunday, May 11. The aftershock had a magnitude of 3.8, located 3 km east of Montemorelos. Civil Protection Director Héctor Parada reported that it was felt mildly.

What measures can you take before an earthquake?

The Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection recommends:

  • Check your home periodically, looking for sagging, collapses, or existing cracks and fissures.
  • Pack a life bag with necessary keys, extra cash, a flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, an emergency phone, non-perishable food, toilet paper, and personal items.
  • Participate seriously in the drills in your area.
  • Keep your electronic devices powered and carry an extra charge.
  • Determine the lowest-risk areas and meeting points with your family and friends.
  • Specify a place in the city with your family as a meeting point.
  • Design and wear an identification bracelet or necklace with emergency phone number and blood type.
