MEXICO CITY (apro).- The Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of the Navy (Semar) issued a tsunami warning for the Mexican Pacific coast due to the 8.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Kamchatskiy, Russia.

In a statement, the agency reported that, based on the earthquake assessment, waves are expected to arrive starting at 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, Central Mexico Time.

The statement clarifies that the waves are expected to be less than 20 centimeters high, but recommends that civil protection authorities keep the population away from the beaches until the alert is lifted.

He also reported that strong currents are expected at the entrance to the ports.

A tsunami was reported off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, following the 8.7 magnitude earthquake, and tsunami warnings were issued for Japan, Alaska, and Hawaii.

At the time of writing, tsunami warning sirens had been activated in Japan and Hawaii.
