Are singer-songwriters Tate McRae and The Kid LAROI an item? The internet sure seems to think so. Fans began speculating that the two were dating in early January, and they have been spotted a few times since.
Prior to potentially seeing 20-year-old LAROI, McRae, also 20, dated Columbus Blue Jackets center Cole Sillinger. In 2021, Sillinger called her his celebrity crush, and a few months later, the couple went Instagram official.
“It was really funny—I was like ‘I can forever hold this over you till the day you die, that I was your celebrity crush,” McRae joked with Entertainment Tonight on the 2022 VMAs red carpet.
The pair seemingly parted ways in early 2023, after McRae took down all photos with him from her Instagram.
And now, it appears that McRae has moved on. Ahead, a full timeline of McRae and LAROI’s rumored relationship.
It all started during the first week of the new year. McRae post a photo dump from a recent vacation in Mexico, and the first picture in the carousel was a mirror selfie in what appears to be LAROI’s shirt.
LAROI even commented on her post, dropping a single “😎” emoji and further fanning the flames.
“Isn’t that shirt yours??👀,” one user replied.
A video of the pair dancing with friends also started circulating, implying that LAROI was actually on the trip with McRae.
Roughly one week later, paparazzi captured some pictures of LAROI and McRae leaving a dinner date together at Giorgio Baldi in L.A.
February 2024According to People, the rumored couple were seen holding hands at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game after McRae’s headlining performance, however, she and LAROI still have yet to confirm or deny their relationship.
In an interview that month with Billboard, she reflected on their relationship.
“It was a really funny process, because me and LAROI have never really, like, taken each other seriously,” she said. “You know when you’re in a relationship and you sing around each other, but you don’t really, like, sing? So it was a little stressful being in the studio singing and writing in front of him, but it was a cool experience to watch him in his process.”
September 2024The couple attended the MTV Video Music Awards.
They were spotted walking hand-in-hand in early 2025 in New York City.

Rumors of a split circulated over the summer. On July 25, LAROI appeared to confirm the breakup in a post on X, formerly Twitter, responding to a fan suggesting he was shading McRae online.
“Tate and I are on good terms,” he wrote in a text message screenshot between himself and his reps, shared with his followers. “And this just looks messy / whack.”
He added that he had “NOTHING to do” with online criticism of Tate, writing, “I DO NOT co sign this behavior whatsoever.”
September 2025On September 26, McRae released “Tit For Tat,” and fans are interpreting lyrics to be about LAROI.
“The day I met you, boy, I thought it was a blessing / In the heat of it, I always took your side,” she sings. “It’s a shame you out here tryna make it messy / Wow, you’re messy, damn.”
Tate continued, “Let’s go song for song, let’s go back to back / Let’s go tit for tat, boy, you asked for that / That’s the best you got, where’s the good one at? / I was never as far away as you thought.”
She may have been referencing his recent song, “A Cold Play,” in which he talks about trying to “fix” someone.
McRae sings, “Fix your fucking self, kiss my ass for that.”
