MNAA closes for construction work next Monday

The National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA), in Lisbon, will close to the public on September 29 as part of works under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), with no scheduled reopening date.
According to a statement released Monday, admission to the museum will be free during its final week of opening (until September 28). A free program of activities for children and families is planned for Sunday, including guided tours, games, and musical performances.
During the works, interventions are planned in three areas of the MNAA building.
On the 2nd floor, dedicated to the collections of goldsmithing, jewelry, ceramics and arts of the expansion, “the updating of the museum equipment is planned, as well as the respective exhibition discourse”.
According to the note, at the European Art Gallery, “the signage and museography will be reformulated and updated; the building's rehabilitation project should include the roofs and the conservation of the facades”,
The conservation and restoration campaign for the Albertas Chapel, part of the museum building, "continues, however, and its reopening is also conditioned by the RRP schedule." Regarding the reopening, it is also "conditioned by the schedule of this intervention process" of the plan's works.
"This is a unique moment and opportunity to prepare the museum for the next decade, with the hope that the reopening will provide visitors with more inclusive and accessible facilities and an updated understanding of our collections," reads the note, quoted by the Lusa news agency.
The works are carried out under the auspices of the Lisbon Tourism and Cultural Heritage Association — Public Institute (PC-IP), the entity responsible for monitoring and physically and financially implementing the plan in the sector.
