Montenegro ends campaign to remember Spinumviva

Ninety days after the first news about Spinumviva, Luís Montenegro's campaign started all over again. In his last campaign speech, the Prime Minister and Social Democrat leader pointed directly at the opposition and assured them: “I will never do to anyone what they wanted to do to me”. It was the first and only time during the election campaign that the Social Democrat spoke in these terms about the process that led to legislative elections that the AD always tried to say that no one wanted or desired .

In a well-stocked Campo Pequeno — not as packed as last year, however — Luís Montenegro once again suggested that he was the target of an orchestrated campaign to overthrow him. “I never wanted to impose our thinking and attack others. My stance is different: I am here to present solutions and execute what I propose. I subject myself to all scrutiny. But no one has ever been as transparent as I have been.”

The Social Democrat leader also took advantage of the last day of the campaign to promise a new extraordinary increase in pensions on the last day of the campaign. “All pensions will be updated annually. But we will increase the pensions of those with lower incomes. When we can, we will provide the extraordinary supplement. But we will not jeopardize the sustainability of Social Security.”

Another of the strong points of Montenegro's speech was the issue of immigration, a subject that was mentioned in several speeches by the Social Democratic candidate, although never in the terms he used in his last speech. “Those who follow the rules will come here. Those who are not legal will have to leave Portugal,” said the Social Democratic leader, once again lamenting having received a “mess” on the subject of immigration and security.

Before him, Nuno Melo, leader of the CDS and Minister of Defense, made his final appeal to vote: “The AD deserves this victory. Help those who help you. Help the AD to obtain the majority to govern without depending on anyone else. Chega was the PS’s greatest ally and the PS was Chega’s greatest ally. Every vote for Chega, every vote for the Liberal Initiative will only bring the PS closer to governing.”
