Netherlands: Far-right leader resumes election campaign

Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders , whose party is leading in the polls, announced Wednesday that he will resume his campaign for early parliamentary elections, days after suspending it due to the threat of a jihadist attack.

"The elections are approaching, it's the campaign season (...). So I'm getting back to work," Wilders said in a message posted on the social network X.

Last week, Belgian authorities arrested three people accused of planning a "jihadist-inspired terrorist attack against political figures" using explosives mounted on drones.

Wilders suspended his campaign after being told he was also a target of this alleged cell, which targeted Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever.

Geert Wilders, a critic of Islam and immigration, regularly receives death threats. He has been under constant police protection since 2004 and has canceled several television and radio debates.

Wilders ' party (PVV) is leading the polls for the early parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of the month in the Netherlands.

In June, Geert Wilders stunned the Dutch political class by causing the collapse of a fragile four-party coalition amid disagreements over immigration.

New elections are scheduled for October 29 and the far-right leader hopes to repeat the surprising victory of November 2023, when the PVV won.
