Oliva repeats the Art Brut exhibition that attracted 25,000 people in Paris

The difference between the Paris exhibition and the one in S. João da Madeira, as Marine Lusardy reveals today, is that the special sensitivity of these authors is now also made known in another expressive domain besides the predominant Painting and Sculpture, since the Portuguese exhibition also highlights the influence of Art Brut in “contemporary practices such as Photography”.

Andreia Magalhães, director of the Oliva Art Center, recognizes that the Treger Saint Silvestre collection “has been a determining factor in the consolidation of partnerships with leading European institutions” – including the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, in Porto, and, at an international level, Casa Encendida, in Madrid, and the Gugging Museum, near the Austrian city of Vienna.

“The exhibition held at the Halle Saint Pierre contributed to the visibility of the collection and confirmed the growing interest of the artistic and museum community in Art Brut,” explains the director. “The decision to present this same exhibition at the Oliva Art Centre is due to its impact and relevance, and is part of the mission to foster cooperation networks, provide continued access to the works and integrate an active and recognized European cultural circuit,” she highlights.

Artists represented in “Singular Spirit” include Adolf Wölfli, Aloïse Corbaz, Anna Zemánková, Augustin Lesage, August Walla, Carlo Zinelli, Dado (Miodrag Djuric), Eugene Von Bruenchenhein, Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern, Guo Fengyi, Henry Darger, James Deeds, Johann Hauser, Lee Godie, Louis Pons, Luboš Plný, Miroslav Tichý, Prophet Royal Robertson, Scottie Wilson, Thornton Dial, Edmund Monsiel, Paul Goesch, Pietro Ghizzardi, Martha Grünenwaldt, Marilena Pelosi, Marco Berlanda, Raphaël Lonné, Giovanni Battista Podestà, John Henry Toney, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, Tomasz Machciński, Derrick Alexis Coard, Misleidys Francisca Castillo Pedroso and Pascal Tassini.

For António Saint Silvestre, co-owner of the collection on deposit at Oliva, the selection now on display to the public ranges from “artists associated with the founding moments of Art Brut to authors from more recent and diverse contexts, which broadens the possibilities for reading this field of creation”.

In this context of diversity, and because it “presents for the first time in Portugal a significant nucleus of Raw Photography”, the collector highlights that the exhibition constitutes a rare opportunity to appreciate “photos, photomontages and collages produced by authors outside conventional artistic circuits, often in contexts of seclusion or social isolation”.
