Suspect arrested for assault on elderly man in Torre Pacheco

Suspect arrested for assault on elderly man in Torre Pacheco

A third person involved in the attack on an elderly man in Torre Pacheco was arrested in the Basque Country, Spain, while attempting to flee to France. According to the newspaper El Español, three people were arrested by the Guardia Civil this Monday: two individuals who allegedly destroyed evidence and facilitated the escape, and the alleged perpetrator of the attack.

With these arrests, the number of people detained in connection with the unrest between North African residents of the Torre Pacheco neighborhood and neighboring communities, as well as far-right groups, rises to 10. Among the first detainees are five Spaniards and three Moroccans, while the last three arrests involve two individuals of North African origin, from the North African region, and one whose nationality has not been confirmed.

An investigation is currently underway into the case, with the newspaper El Español reporting that the police are trying to understand why the three men in question were at the scene, as they did not rob the victim and only beat him.

The alleged perpetrator of the attack was in Rentería, in the Basque Country, when he was detained by police. He apparently intended to take a train to Irún, later arriving in France. In addition to the arrests already made by authorities, 80 people have been identified.

Since Thursday, July 10, Torre Pacheco, a town of around 40,000 inhabitants in the Murcia region of southern Spain, has been the scene of violent clashes motivated by race and identity.

On one side, residents of Maghrebi origin, who represent a third of the municipality's population. On the other, groups of far-right activists who came from abroad, openly aiming to "hunt down" immigrants and their descendants. In the middle, the police, trying to calm the situation, are forced to resort to force, including rubber bullets.
