He makes walnut shells: He creates 110 different objects

Yücel, who moved with his family to the Akçay neighborhood of Edremit, began making miniature ornaments from walnut shells after a relative recommended it. Having converted his balcony into a workshop, Yücel now exhibits his products on the municipality's art street in the Altınkum area of the Zeytinli neighborhood.

'ONE OBJECT TAKES ME AN AVERAGE DAY'

Yücel, who has created 110 different objects to date, designs a wide variety of figures from walnut shells, including baglamas, turtles, birds, lampshades, wheelbarrows, baby cradles, motorcycles, helicopters, and airplanes. Yücel said that he began his early work with dolls and ships, and that he has gradually expanded his collection by focusing on animal and human figures.

Yücel explained that he processes walnut shells using special methods. After completely emptying the shells, he cleans them with water and pesticides, then polishes them with water-based varnish to make them more durable. "One object takes me an average day," Yücel said. "My goal isn't to make money, but to be appreciated by others."

'I ADD ON IT EVERY TIME'

Yücel, who emphasized that he derives his true happiness from the admiration and positive comments he receives from those around him in this endeavor that he started as a hobby, said, "I have been doing this for 10 years and I continue to improve on it each time.

"Everywhere I go, I look carefully at objects and get inspired for new designs. People who come see the production process, and their words of 'Well done,' are enough for me," he said.

'IT IS A GREAT WORK OF ART FOR ME'

Examining Süleyman Yücel's objects, Sedef Derici said, "I'm seeing these for the first time. Toothpick holders, violin-playing figures, yogurt makers, piano players, carpet weavers. They're all made from walnut shells. For me, the fact that such detailed workmanship comes from walnut is a great work of art."
