All About Kate Hudson’s Fiancé, Danny Fujikawa
Kate Hudson and Danny Fujikawa knew each other for 15 years before they fell in love. Hudson is friends with Fujikawa’s step-sisters, Sarah and Erin Foster, known for their popular Netflix show Nobody Wants This.
Hudson and Fujikawa made their official couple debut in May 2017, on the red carpet of Snatched.
In 2020, Hudson told People, “He makes me feel beautiful every single moment of the day, even when we have fought. I still feel loved. His devotion to the family unit makes me feel safe and confident and secure.”
Though Fujikawa has had a somewhat public career as a musician, he gives fewer interviews than his famous fiancée. But in 2019, he made some comments about Hudson on the red carpet at the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s gala, where she was being honored with The Courage Award.
“What makes her the most courageous... [is that] in the face of fear, she doesn’t back down. That’s for sure,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “I’ve seen her do things that I can’t imagine doing myself and I’m very proud of her. And I’m in awe of her for some of the things that she is able to do when she sets her mind to it.”
Here’s everything we know about Hudson and Fujikawa and their relationship so far.
Fujikawa has a fairly famous family history. His grandfather was Dr. Yoshihiko Fred Fujikawa, one of the first Japanese-Americans to attend medical school in the United States. He shared a photo of his grandparents in 2012, his ojisan and obachan.
Fujikawa’s parents, Ron Fujikawa and Melissa Linehan, had three children: himself and his brothers Michael and Braden. After divorcing Linehan, Ron went on to date Rebecca Dyer for 10 years before he passed away in 2012. Dyer was married to composer David Foster, and Ron was close to Fujikawa’s step-siblings, Jordan, Erin, and Sara Foster. The blended family grew up together in Los Angeles.
According to his LinkedIn, Fujikawa studied music at New York University from 2004 to 2005, when he dropped out. He jokes that he spent his time there bartending at Lit lounge, doing “lots of walking, and not going to school.”
The musician found success as the singer and guitarist for the band Chief, with his brother Michael and bandmates Evan Koga and Mike Moonves. They released the EP “The Castle Is Gone” in 2009 and their first album Modern Rituals in 2010.
“Chief has opened my eyes musically,” Fujikawa told Domino Publishing Company when Chief got started. “I’m not just working on my own anymore and in that way I’ve grown as a person: I started out as a guitarist and now I have a voice.”
The band dissolved in June 2011, but in 2013, he founded Lightwave Records with Chris Acosta. He’s also worked on video editing and music for companies and other artists, and even worked on one of Hudson’s clothing line promotions in 2019.
Fujikawa then co-produced Hudson’s 2024 debut album, Glorious.
In an interview on The Talk in 2018, Hudson shared that she first met Fujikawa through the Fosters.
“We’ve known each other for 15 years. He’s my best friend’s step-brother,” she said. “We kinda skipped through the part of knowing what the hiccups were. You kinda skip the part of going, ‘Oh, you’re like that?’”
She added, “In terms of family, I’ve known his family forever. To have that connection is really powerful.”
After their May 2017 red carpet debut, she shared more about their first date in a December 2017 Instagram post. The star said that the first time they met, she was only 23-years-old and pregnant with her first baby, Ryder Russell Robinson, whom she shares with with ex-husband Chris Robinson. She then revealed their first real date took place in December 2016, and it kind of happened by accident.
“A year ago today, Danny took me on a hike and what I thought was just a hike with a family friend turned very quickly into an unexpected first date,” she said. “No moves were made on this first date. In fact, it took months for him to make a first move! And as a kiss on this bridge would have been nice, the kiss a year later was so much sweeter.”
In September 2021, Hudson announced they had gotten engaged by sharing a picture of them kissing, a ring on her left hand, with the caption, “Let’s go! 👰♀️💒🤵🏻♂️.”
But it seems like they have not yet gotten hitched. In June 2023, she wrote a loving tribute to Fujikawa for his birthday, referencing their decision to get married when they “have time to plan it.”
In December 2022, Hudson talked about how planning a wedding was not something she was in a rush to do.
“I just haven’t planned the wedding,” she explained on ITV’s This Morning. “I go back and forth, I go, ‘Do I really want a big wedding?’ We’re so happy. It’s not the first thing I need.”
She added, “I’ve been there before. I’ve got kids with three different dads. It’s not really the golden ticket—a wedding. And we also don’t know where we’re gonna do it. But it will happen.”
In a March 2025 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, she admitted they may never get married. Her excitement over a wedding just isn’t there. “I just don’t have the same kind of like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to get married…and I can’t wait for the party!’” she said. “It’s the opposite. I’m like, ‘OK, I have to plan it, and then it’s going to cost so much money,’ and it’s just a lot.” She’d “maybe” elope or just stay engaged.
“Yeah, I like the idea of being engaged forever. I love it,” she said. With getting married, “the contractual thing is tough for me. I like my freedom. I like the concept of freedom, and so this thing when you’re signing the government contract to me, just my own thing, is like probably why—well, I was raised by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. They never signed the contract. They’ve been engaged since I was 7.”
The couple welcomed their daughter, Rani Rose, on Oct. 2, 2018. Rani was named to honor Fujikawa’s father, Ron, and it is pronounced Ronnie. Hudson announced the birth on Instagram with an explanation of the name, writing, “Ron was the most special man who we all miss dearly. To name her after him is an honor.”
Fujikawa is also the stepdad to Hudson’s other children, including Ryder, and her son Bingham Hawn Bellamy, whom she shares with former boyfriend Matt Bellamy.
“My love, simply put, you are the most brilliant father ❤️ We all love you so much,” Hudson said of Fujikawa in 2021 for Father’s Day.
In December 2022, Hudson told Byrdie in December 2022 that she was on the fence about having more children, saying, “I’ve been having children my entire life. I’ve got my 4-year-old, and I’ve got a kid in college. And I don’t even know if I’m done yet. You know, I don’t have that answer yet.”
