Selena Gomez Explains How She and Benny Blanco Are Approaching Wedding Planning
Benny Blanco and Selena Gomez are days away from releasing their album I Said I Love You First on March 21. Right now, the couple is more focused on their music than wedding planning, they told Rolling Stone.
In their wide-ranging interview published today, the engaged couple gave an update on their nuptials and explained why they waited six months to go public with their relationship. They privately started seeing each other in June 2023 but ultimately revealed they were together that December. They got engaged a year later in December 2024.
They waited to tell the world about their romantic involvement “because it’s a lot,” Blanco said. “I remember us having a conversation about whether we were going to keep dating or not. We just had to make sure, because she’s as big as it gets and it’s a big undertaking. It’s not like you date someone for a few weeks and then you’re like, ‘Oh, OK, bye.’ So we just took it slow. Then it started becoming such a hard thing, because it was like, ‘I don’t want to just have dinner inside with you and have all of our dates inside and we’re wearing a mask the entire date, and then we have to go hide in a car.’
“I was so sure that I was gonna marry her. I just knew,” he continued. “It’s just a very different feeling. I know when Sel wakes up, she’s thinking in her head, ‘How can I make this day as good as I can for Benny?’ And I know I’m waking up and saying, ‘How can I make this day as good for Sel?’ We’re just thinking about each other.”
Gomez’s vision for their wedding changes daily, Blanco revealed: “I think every day she’s planned a new wedding in her head. We’re very much ‘take it one day at a time’-type of people. We’re still not over this moment. Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring.”
She added, “Also, I genuinely feel like this is such a special time that we get to apply it to this album and really just pour our heart into it, and completely translate what we feel and bring it to the world. That’s my main focus right now, at least.”
They’re enjoying this stage of their relationship “so much,” Blanco stated. “It feels like we got engaged yesterday, but also feels like we got engaged 20 years ago. I’ve known her since she was 18, and so it’s like we got all that stuff out of the way. By the time we’re dating, it’s like, whoa. My biggest regret is that we didn’t get to do this earlier, like we waited this long to be together. But I know it was perfect and it was right.”
“Everything happens for a reason,” Gomez quipped.
