EL MUNDO wins another award in Bilbao: Gonzalo I. Bienvenida wins the trophy for the best bullfighting chronicle from the Cocherito Club.

EL MUNDO wins another award in Bilbao: Gonzalo I. Bienvenida wins the trophy for the best bullfighting chronicle from the Cocherito Club.

For the second consecutive year, EL MUNDO has been awarded the prize for the best bullfighting chronicle of the Corridas Generales by the Cocherito Club of Bilbao: Gonzalo I. Bienvenida has won the Desteñido trophy for the chronicle published in these pages on August 23rd under the title "An anthological faena as revenge", inspired by the great work of Diego Urdiales that marked the Corridas Generales.

Bienvenida, precisely, collected the Cocherito Club award during the last fair, on behalf of EL MUNDO, for the best chronicle of 2024 , written by Zabala de la Serna.

The Cocherito Club has awarded the Desteñido and Cecilio prizes for the best bullfighting chronicle and the best photograph published in the press during the last Corridas Generales de Bilbao, respectively, to Gonzalo I. Bienvenida , of the newspaper EL MUNDO, and Emilio Méndez, of the newspaper ABC. The jury's decision was made public during the colloquium held today at the Sociedad Bilbaina.

According to the jury of the Desteñido award, the report by Gonzalo I. Bienvenida published on August 23 in the pages of EL MUNDO has managed to vehemently convey the vindication in Bilbao of the immense figure of Diego Urdiales . The title of his report (" An anthological performance as revenge" ), brings us closer to a bullfighter who, having offered great afternoons in Bilbao, enters the Bilbao season by way of replacing Morante de la Puebla, and does so to claim that he is a cult matador, beyond the circuit and its fashions and faithful to a style where purity prevails.

For its part, the jury of the Cecilio Award highlights that the photograph taken by the Mexican Emilio Méndez, and published in ABC on August 23, captures the perfection with which Diego Urdiales executed the natural bullfighting in the Vista Alegre bullring, with that bull Guapetón, from Garcigrande, turning his head to firmly follow the deployed flights of the muleta around the verticality of the bullfighter's figure, in a movement attested by the horizontality of the banderilla, and which constitutes an unbeatable image of the one who is deservedly considered the king of muleta passes.

The Desteñido and Cecilio awards for the best report and best photograph of the 2025 Corridas Generales are part of the program of activities developed by the Bilbao Cocherito Club in its capacity as an active agent in the organization of initiatives linked to the promotion of bullfighting culture.

Dean of bullfighting clubs , it was founded in 1910 in honor of the bullfighter Cástor Jaureguibeitia Ibarra (Cocherito de Bilbao).
