Jennifer Lawrence will receive a Donostia Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Jennifer Lawrence will receive a Donostia Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

American actress Jennifer Lawrence, 35, will receive one of the Donostia Awards at the 73rd San Sebastián Film Festival, which will take place from September 19 to 27. Producer Esther García, associated with Pedro Almodóvar's films through the company El Deseo, will be this year's other honoree, as announced on July 30.

In a statement, the San Sebastian-based festival considers Lawrence "one of the most influential actresses of our time." It also specifies that she will receive the honorary award at the gala taking place on September 26 at the Kursaal Auditorium, before the screening of her latest film, Die My Love , "a work that marks a turning point in her career" and in which the actress also participates as a producer.

Lawrence's award is the second announced for this September's edition, following the one to be given to El Deseo producer Esther García.

Jennifer Lawrence has worked on films such as Silver Linings Playbook , for which she won an Oscar in 2021, American Hustle , Don't Look Up , Joy , and The Hunger Games trilogy . In 2018, she expanded her filmmaking work by co-founding Excellent Cadaver with Justine Ciarrocchi, a production company focused on “risky, thought-provoking storytelling,” including Causeway , No Bad Feelings , and the documentaries Zurawski v. Texas and Bread & Roses.

Her production company's latest project is the aforementioned Die My Love , directed by Lynne Ramsay, a film that competed for the Palme d'Or at the last Cannes Film Festival. Starring and produced by Lynne Ramsay, it's an intense drama about a woman plunged into madness that worsens after the birth of her first child. The actress stars in the cast, along with Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek.

Set in rural America and based on the novel by French-based Argentine writer Ariana Harwicz, the film transports the plot from the French countryside to the forests and meadows of Montana, with an unbridled and sensual Lawrence in a performance that divided critics after its screening. “Having children changes everything, it changes your whole life; it's brutal and incredible,” the actress said at Cannes about a film she shot between her first and second births. At her side, Ramsay justified the violence of his proposal: “There's nothing like postpartum depression; it's incredibly isolating.”

Director Lynne Ramsay (Glasgow, 1969) presented her debut feature Ratcatcher (1999) in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, which was then programmed in the Perlak section at San Sebastián. After its run in the Filmmakers' Fortnight, Morvern (2002) won the FIPRESCI Prize at San Sebastián. She returned to Cannes with We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) and You Were Never Really Here (2017), which earned her the Best Screenplay Award and Joaquin Phoenix the Best Actor Award.
