Martin Scorsese on one of his favorite films of the year: "Emotional, psychologically powerful, and deeply moving."

Renowned American director Martin Scorsese recently surprised everyone with a statement about one of his favorite films of the season. The legendary filmmaker spoke bluntly, enthusiastically praising an independent film that, in his words, left a profound emotional and psychological mark on him.

It's about The Shining of Television , directed by Jane Schoenbrun and produced by A24. This enigmatic psychological thriller with horror overtones premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and has been shown in Europe at festivals like Berlin. The film has won over international critics, but hasn't been released in theaters in Spain, going straight to streaming .

Scorsese, however, rescues it from obscurity with an appraisal that elevates its status: "It was really emotional, psychologically powerful, and very moving ," he said in an interview with the Associated Press . He also confessed that he didn't know who had directed it until after being shocked by the experience.

A neon atmosphere

Starring Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine, the film, a cross between a thriller and a minimalist horror film, explores the strange friendship that develops between two teenagers, both fans of the same 1990s sci-fi series , The Dark Rose . Their love for the series will shape their lives, to the point of blending fiction with reality.

The narrative builds slowly, "catching you up," as Scorsese noted, generating an increasingly enveloping dark (and neon-lit) atmosphere. The film, with influences such as Twin Peaks: The Return , offers a different look at youth trauma and the construction of the self, wrapped in a visual aesthetic that reinforces its hypnotic character, as well as in a subtlequeer narrative.

Schoenbrun, thrilled by the recognition, humorously shared her reaction on social media , following Scorsese's remarks: "I got a fever, lay down on the floor, and started gasping for air," according to IndieWire . The Shining of Television is currently available with a Movistar Plus+ subscription.
