Pelagie Archaeological Museum: Reopening with New Exhibition
The Pelagie Regional Archaeological Museum of Lampedusa reopens today, June 7, at 8 pm. The structure remained closed for a few weeks to allow for some installation work. During the ceremony, a work donated by the artist Manuela Carnini, aka Fridami, will be presented. The museum, which was reopened in June 2024 following the assignment to the ATS Pelagies by the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples and the Municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa, hosts several works that tell the story of the island as a crossroads of stories, peoples and visions.
In addition to a rich archaeological section, visitors can admire the exhibition “Mediterranean Routes: Lampedusa as an island of the contemporary”, an artistic journey that explores the themes of identity, migration and memory in the heart of the Mediterranean. The works on display include some by important contemporary artists belonging to the collection purchased by the Municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa thanks to funding from the Ministry of Culture, including William Kentridge, Gian Maria Tosatti, Francesco Arena and Emilio Isgrò.
Also exhibited are works by local and national artists, including Giovanni Fragapane, Ninì Meli, Andrea Cascella and Pietro Consagra, to underline the deep bond between the community, tradition and contemporaneity. The exhibition also has two thematic rooms: one is dedicated to the Port Authority of Lampedusa, for years a symbol of rescue and humanity at sea; the other tells the story of Pope Francis' visit in 2013.
The exhibition “Mediterranean Routes – Lampedusa as an island of the contemporary” is an invitation to reflect on the cultural identity of the islands, on migrations, on hospitality and on the beauty that comes from the encounter between different worlds. The Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 7:00 p.m. to midnight.
