Pompeii: The mosaic brought to Germany by a Wehrmacht officer returns to the excavations after 80 years.

A Roman mosaic depicting a pair of lovers, donated by a Wehrmacht captain to a German citizen, will be returned to the Pompeii Archaeological Park tomorrow by the Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Command. The restitution ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the Auditorium degli Scavi, in the presence of Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, and Major General Francesco Gargaro. The mosaic was repatriated from Germany via a diplomatic expedition arranged by the Italian Consulate General in Stuttgart, Germany. The work was donated by a military supply chain worker in Italy during World War II; tomorrow it will be returned by its heirs to the TPC Unit in Rome.
