What to Know About the Red, White, & Royal Blue Sequel

“It’s official, a Red, White, & Royal Blue sequel is in the works!” Amazon MGM Studios tweeted in May 2024. The studio further confirmed the news with a teaser poster that reads, “Fancy another slice?” The answer is certainly yes.
In a clip posted by Entertainment Weekly, the film’s director, Matthew López, broke the news during a special screening of the film on May 9, 2024. “Yes, there’s gonna be a sequel,” he said, and the audience immediately began to cheer.
The rom-com is based on the wildly popular novel of the same title by Casey McQuiston, which was originally published in 2019. It follows Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the U.S. president, and the British Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), as they fall into an enemies-to-lovers romance and then must keep their relationship secret.
On the page and on the screen, fans grew to love the couple—and they’ve been hoping for a sequel since the film premiered in the summer of 2023. Now, part two is officially on the way. And it has a title: Red, White & Royal Wedding. Ahead, everything you need to know about the sequel.
Who will be in the cast? The film’s leads, Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez, will be reprising their roles as Henry and Alex. As for the rest of the original cast, which includes Uma Thurman as the U.S. president, that still remains unknown.
Who is behind the scenes?Jamie Babbit (Only Murders in the Building, But I’m a Cheerleader) will direct the film. The script will be written by Gemma Burgess (My Lady Jane), Matthew López (Red, White & Royal Blue), and McQuiston.
“Working with this team to bring Red, White & Royal Blue to life has been a dream come true, and I hope readers and watchers alike will love how the story continues in the sequel,” McQuiston said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to Matthew for all his hard work on the first movie and in co-creating this new story with me, and I know that Jamie has the vision, wit, and tenderness to take great care of Alex and Henry from here.”
Babbit shared that she’s “thrilled to work with this brilliant team.” She added, “After directing But I’m a Cheerleader in my 20s, I’m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding. We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy.”
As of now, no official release date has been announced yet.
What will the Red, White, & Royal Blue sequel be about?Details about the plot haven’t been released yet, but we can look to the ending of the first movie for hints: Alex and Henry go public with their relationship at Buckingham Palace, and Alex’s mom gets elected for another term after Texas finally votes blue. Will the sequel explore how the couple handles dating in the spotlight? We’ll have to wait for Amazon MGM to confirm.
