The exhibition "Workshop of Genius: The Art of Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger" explores the phenomenon of one of the most important artistic families of the 16th century. Deeply rooted in the spirit of the Renaissance, the masters' work expressed European ideals and reflected the artistic, religious, and social transformations of the time. Their influence extended far beyond the borders of Wittenberg, influencing the art of Central Europe. They (especially Cranach the Elder) created not only magnificent works but also an impressive workshop full of apprentices, considered one of the most fascinating artistic and business ventures of its time.
The Szczecin Castle will showcase numerous paintings and graphic works, including portraits of historical figures. Works depicting the most frequently explored themes will also be on display. Among the works on display are the famous depiction of "Adam and Eve," the allegorical painting "Hercules at Omphale," and the moralizing scene "The Mismatched Couple." The exhibition is not limited to works by the masters of Wittenberg. Visitors will also see works by imitators and continuators of the Cranach style, created both in their own workshop and in other European artistic centers.
The castle exhibition will be changing. For a short time only (two weeks), visitors will have the opportunity to admire one of the most important masterpieces – the portrait of Philip I, Duke of Pomerania, from the collection of the National Museum in Szczecin – alongside other works by the Cranachs.
The exhibition can be viewed in the Castle's Northern Gallery (North Wing, entrance B or D) until May 17, 2026 (open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.). (K)
