Bad weather. More than 20 occurrences in Madeira

Madeira Civil Protection registered 26 incidents this Saturday due to bad weather, which caused flooding, landslides and led to the closure of a section of the expressway in the municipality of Ribeira Brava.

“As of 9:30 am on May 10, we have recorded 26 incidents related to adverse weather conditions, involving 58 operators and 26 ground resources,” according to a note published on the Regional Civil Protection Service website.

The regional authority indicated that the majority of occurrences (16) were floods, with six mass movements and four warning signs.

Ribeira Brava, where Via Expresso 4, on the Serra de Água section, is closed due to the total obstruction of the road, was the municipality that registered the most incidents (13), followed by Santa Cruz (five), Funchal (four), Câmara de Lobos (two), Ponta do Sol (one) and Machico (one).

The Madeira archipelago was already under an orange warning due to heavy rainfall, and is now under a yellow warning until 9 pm, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
