Free: central bloc would be a problem for the country

Livre's spokesman, Rui Tavares, said this Saturday that a central bloc of PS and PSD would be undesirable and a problem for the country because it would hand the opposition over to the far right.

“At this moment, a central bloc would be a problem for the country in the sense that it would hand over the opposition to the far right . And, therefore, I see that it is a possibility that is in the equation and will certainly be in the equation of reasoning of the President of the Republic when he says, and rightly so, that it does not matter who comes first”, said Rui Tavares to journalists, after a visit to the Alverca Fair, in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, district of Lisbon.

However, the Livre leader said that there is another possibility on the table, which is to return to a “more responsible, more original and more genuine” parliamentarism , which means having a government that seeks to speak to parliament.

Rui Tavares stressed that the Government of António Costa (PS) had the arrogance of an absolute majority and did not care about parliament and the Government of Luís Montenegro (PSD) has the same arrogance, but does not even have an absolute majority.

“I will give you an example: on the day of the blackout, the headquarters of the executive, where the prime minister and the ministers were, is 200 meters from parliament and there was no minister who came to the Assembly of the Republic to look for the parliamentary groups”, he pointed out.

For Rui Tavares, a prime minister must try to speak to all parliamentary groups every day, remembering that in some European countries there are governments that have to be supported by four or five parties.

“A government that Livre supports, a government that Livre is part of, a government that Livre leads will always be made by talking every day with the parliamentary groups, because that is the obligation of an executive”, he stressed.

Recent governments have paid “very little” attention to parliament, something that is at the root of the current problems, he stressed .

Regarding the President of the Republic's statements regarding the conditions of governability, Rui Tavares considered that he is giving his reading grid about what he will do from May 19th and is not conditioning the vote in any way.

The Livre spokesperson reaffirmed that if there is a left-wing majority it will be part of the solution, while if the government is right-wing it will be part of the opposition.

“Real opposition, honest opposition and a very vigorous opposition that will defend all rights,” he assured.
