Ílhavo City Council presents a Gastronomic Library to gain "international projection"

Ílhavo City Council presents a Gastronomic Library to gain "international projection"
The "Gastronomic Library" project is nearly complete, in a new building to be constructed at Cais da Malhada, in Ílhavo. It's a starting point, where information, promotion, and gastronomic experiences will be concentrated.

Located at Cais da Malhada in Ílhavo, the design for the "Gastronomic Library" that the city council intends to build in the area of the former slaughterhouse, whose ruins still exist on the site, was presented yesterday. The mayor presents it as a contribution to "connecting the city to the estuary," João Campolargo told Diário de Aveiro. The project is currently underway by aNC arquitectos Arranjos Exteriores, and, not being a new topic, the library was presented in more detail yesterday morning on the day the council celebrated the 35th anniversary of Ílhavo's elevation to city status. The building will be constructed in an area along the banks of today's estuaries and canals, as well as an old seaport. The Atlantic coast is now further away from Malhada, and on the banks of the canals with today's calmer waters, the library's future neighborhood will be the former salt mines of Ílhavo and the fishing district. Learning about Ílhavo's fishing tradition, its shellfish gatherers, seagrass meadows, bivalves, and associated gastronomy, can begin in that building. It's a "starting point," according to João Campolargo, offering access to a "specialized tour" as well as views of the old salt flats and the Bôco River, developing a project that the mayor hopes will gain "international recognition and recognition." We'll be able to enter a library with books dating back to the 17th century, some manuscripts, and from there explore topics such as estuary products, fish, bivalves, and the ecosystems in which they live—a collection of traditional and historical data to serve the present. Therefore, in addition to a collection of all fishing gear, for example, there will be a multipurpose room, a space for "gastronomic experiences" and "show cooking." A place where estuary products will be documented and where we can learn how to consume them. The site will have an outdoor terrace overlooking the estuary, as stated in the project, and the top of the building will have a "large viewpoint" with cafeteria service. It will also have a conference room with capacity for 50 people, exhibitions, and events. Marseille will be the closest location to Ílhavo with the same functions.

At the same time, the expansion of the urban park is progressing, with one end at the sports pavilion, next to Jardim Henriqueta Maia, where the main stage of the Rádio Faneca festival is usually located, and from Avenida 25 de Abril to Via da Malhada, where, nearby, the Gastronomic Library will be located.

Work will not go to competition before the local elections The city council won't be able to put the project out to tender during this term, as the project is still awaited. João Campolargo predicts the project will cost around 800,000 euros, which already includes access costs. But chef Hélio Loureiro, who will house his collection there, has already been appointed to take on the role of curator. A gastronome and researcher of the art of cooking, with ties to the world of wine, he is the author of twenty-six cookbooks and a historical novel, a television host, a columnist for several publications, and a guest judge for international and national competitions. He also chairs the general assembly of the National Federation of Gastronomic Brotherhoods, representing the Porto Style Tripas (Tripas à Moda do Porto) group. The approach to this project was made three months before the next elections, in which João Campolargo will be a candidate again. The project is one of the works listed by the Intermunicipal Community of the Aveiro Region to be financed by the European Union 2030 support framework, has the support of Turismo do Centro and has already secured approval from the Portuguese Environment Agency.

When João Campolargo finishes his term, next October, the project will be entered into the “transition folder” and will be continued, or not, in the following term.
