New members vow to “take Aveiro’s ovos moles to the whole world”

New members vow to “take Aveiro’s ovos moles to the whole world”
World athletics champion Aurora Cunha is among the newest members of the Confraria dos Ovos Moles de Aveiro, who were enthroned yesterday in a memorable ceremony

João Ribeiro (delegate director of Social Services at the University of Aveiro), Maria João Cravo (ceramist), Banda Quinta do Picado (a renowned musical institution with over half a century of history), Aurora Cunha (world athletics champion) and Ribau Esteves (a “key figure in the development of Aveiro and in the promotion of ovos moles”) swore yesterday morning, in the auditorium of the Aveiro Congress Centre, to “take ovos moles from Aveiro to the whole world. That is [obviously] if they don’t eat them first”. The first two were enthroned as effective brothers and the remaining three as honorary brothers of the Confraternity of Ovos Moles de Aveiro, which has been contributing for 16 years to perpetuating the sweet history of ovos moles in Aveiro, the region, Portugal and beyond, and which held its 14th chapter this past Saturday with due pomp and circumstance - had the day not been brightened by the sun, which began the day “embarrassed”, but which then shone, as if to help with the party, and also by the Banda Quinta do Picado. It is also worth noting, “in a gesture of deep gratitude and admiration”, the recognition of merit to the Gastronomic Brotherhood of São Gonçalo, which has been around for over three decades and is the godfather of the Confraria dos Ovos Moles de Aveiro. Mário Luís Brandão da Cruz, better known as “Licas”, received what he said was his “first diploma [laughs]” and made a point of reminding everyone that “life is not just television and street parties. It is also gatherings like this”.
