Threat of rain “takes away visibility” at event in the city

We met Manuel Nunes Ferreira, better known as “Leitão” (as he made a point of saying more than once, so that there would be no doubt) and his wife in the middle of Praça Dr. Joaquim de Melo Freitas. The couple, from Vila da Branca (municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha) were participating in yet another A Barrica - Association of Artisans of the Aveiro Region Crafts Exhibition, which takes place on the second Saturday of each month and which yesterday coincided with the Open City event, organized by the city council as part of the celebrations of Aveiro's Municipal Holiday, May 12th (Patron Saint Joan's Day). “There are a lot of people today, but it's more to see than to buy”, shared with our reporter the 77-year-old craftsman, a “specialist” in utilitarian and decorative pieces made of wood, some of which also contain epoxy resin. “Leitão” spent several years as an emigrant in the United States of America, a country to which he remains connected, but not as much as before. Now, as he no longer works, he only crosses the Atlantic “to be with his family or to take care of some matter”. He took up crafts 25 years ago and, since then, has never stopped “feeding the animal”. “This way, I occupy my time and put my brain to work”, he confided.
