With the onset of autumn cold weather, encounters with snakes in natural areas are becoming less common among Muscovites, according to Sergei Burmistrov, Head of the Wildlife Protection and Monitoring Department at the Moscow Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection.

The specialist explained that as temperatures drop, these cold-blooded animals become less active. At temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, snakes stop hunting and leave their usual habitats to find shelter for hibernation. According to Burmistrov, the reptiles hide in soil crevices, under tree roots, and in rodent burrows, where they enter a state of suspended animation until spring.

The expert noted that remaining outdoors during this period is dangerous for snakes, as they could become prey to predatory birds and mammals. Currently, the reptiles are actively searching for suitable wintering sites.
