Toni Collette and Anthony Hopkins join the cast of a film about a disabled boy.

Toni Collette and Anthony Hopkins join the cast of a film about a disabled boy.

The moving story previously told in Netflix's Norwegian documentary, "The Extraordinary Life of Ibelin," will be adapted into a feature film. The star-studded cast of "Ibelin" includes Charlie Plummer, Stephen Graham, Toni Collette, and Anthony Hopkins.

The hero of the story Morten Tyldum will now tell in his film is Norwegian teenager Mats Steen. Suffering from Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophy, the boy is almost completely absorbed by the online world of the game "World of Warcraft."

Toward the end of his life —Steen died at the age of 25 in 2014— he began writing a blog, which he left accessible to his loved ones. When they later announced Steen's death via his blog, the response was surprising. It turned out that Steen had made a large circle of friends through video games and had also influenced the lives of many users of the virtual world.

The title of the film, directed by Tyldum, an Oscar nominee for "The Imitation Game," is borrowed from Mats Steen's online pseudonym, which he used in the game "World of Warcraft. " The screenplay for "Ibelin," based on Steen's blog, was written by Ilaria Bernardini and Hossein Amini. The film will portray not only the Steen family but also the community of "World of Warcraft" fans who have become Ibelin fans.

"Ibelin" - who will star in the film?

The film is being produced by Vendome Pictrues and Pathé, who previously collaborated on the Oscar-winning film "CODA." Filming is scheduled to begin in Europe in 2026. The film will star Charlie Plummer, Stephen Graham, Toni Collette, Anthony Hopkins, Isabela Merced, and Maisy Stella.

Morten Tyldum has been working primarily on television series lately. He has directed episodes of "Counterpart," "Jack Ryan," "Defending My Son," and "Silos." His next project is also intended for the small screen. The Norwegian is currently filming a TV series adaptation of the acclaimed "Cape Fear," starring Patrick Wilson, Javier Bardem, and Amy Adams.
