All About Matt Bomer’s Husband, Simon Halls

Fellow Travelers star Matt Bomer has been with his partner Simon Halls for over 20 years. The couple has been very private about their relationship for the most part, perhaps under the guidance of Halls, a famous Hollywood publicist. But they were married in 2011 and share three children together.

Here’s what is known about Simon Halls and his relationship with Matt Bomer.

Simon Halls has a long career as a publicist, and was behind campaigns for movies like American Beauty, Brokeback Mountain, Gladiator, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. He’s also been credited for working with many celebrities, like Sam Mendes, Jude Law, Sarah Jessica Parker, the Coen brothers, Annette Bening, Ridley Scott, and Ryan Murphy.

Before launching his career, Halls graduated from the University of Southern California. He then landed his first job in the publicity department of Warner Brothers, per his USC bio. He went on to work as the public relations manager for the first McDonald’s restaurant in Russia, where he lived for two years. When he returned to the U.S., Halls was hired as an account manager at BWR Public Relations, then formed boutique agency Huvane Baum Halls with some colleagues. They were successfully sold and merged with PMK, and Halls was named CEO of the new company. In 2010, he established Slate PR as another boutique agency.

A lot of what is known about Halls is business-related because he keeps his personal life fairly private. However, he does have some philanthropic interests that are close to his heart. Halls sits on the board of Project ALS, an organization that raises money to support medical research for the first effective treatments and potential cures for ALS. Halls was close friends with Project ALS founder Jenifer Estess, who died of the degenerative disease. He was also very close to publicist Nanci Ryder, who was lost to ALS in 2017.

That same year, just before she passed, Bomer and Halls attended the 15th Annual LA County Walk to Defeat ALS with their sons. Bomer said to People at the time, “Nanci Ryder has been part of our family since I’ve been around. She gave Simon [Halls] his first job in the business. She is one of the most vibrant, loving, supportive, courageous people I know. So we’d do anything for her.”

Halls has made some of his few public comments in fundraising videos for Project ALS.

Halls and Bomer were honored in 2017 with the ambassador of children award at Hollygrove’s annual Norma Jean Gala, which raises money for the Los Angeles nonprofit Uplift Family Services.

“We are so honored to be recognized by Uplift Family Services at Hollygrove in this way and are in awe of the work that they do to support children and families in need,” the couple said in a joint statement, adding they were “thrilled to be involved with an organization that fights so fiercely for this cause.”

Bomer initially met Halls when he was looking for a publicist. They hit it off right away, and the White Collar actor had to find a new PR person. They were married in 2011, though they didn’t share the news for a number of years. Bomer did not come out as gay until 2012.

“I came out at a time when it was very risky to do so—I had a studio film that was about to premiere and a television series coming out,” Bomer told Attitude in 2020. “But to me, it was more important to be my most authentic self, both for my family and for myself.”

He continued, “I wasn’t trying to be a role model, nor am I now, but I thought if it could help just one person, then it would be worth it. But to say that didn’t cost me certain things in my career would be a lie. It did. To me, that trade-off was worth it. But it hasn’t been some fairy tale.”

In 2014, Bomer told Details, per People, about the wedding. In 2020, Bomer shared more about his relationship with Halls in an interview with People, saying he was inspired by his grandparents’ relationship to take it “one day at a time.”

“[My grandparents] just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary, so I always look to them, and I see how every day they express their love for each other and I try to follow. They’ve set a pretty good model for me to follow,” he said.

The couple shares three sons. Their eldest, Kit, was born in the 200os, and they welcomed twins, Henry and Walker, a few years later. Halls discussed surrogacy with W magazine in 2008, where he described himself as a “single dad” of a 2-year-old. He said, “In L.A., it’s not that big of a deal. They just see me and my son showing up at assembly, living our very normal lives.”

In the 2020 interview with People, Bomer mentioned fatherhood and romance saying, “Well, we have three kids right now, so you’ve got to fit the romance in when you can.”

At the 13th Annual Gala in the Garden, Bomer told People that he is not expecting his sons to get into show business, saying, “I don’t want anybody out onstage any time soon. I want them to have a nice, normal childhood.”

He continued, “When I was 8 years old, I asked my parents to get me head shots, and they were like, ‘What are you talking about?! Go outside and play!’ I’m so glad they did. I had a normal childhood where I was able to cultivate my own creativity, and I don’t think I would have been ready for this crazy business at 8 years old.”

The couple does foster their kids’ creativity.

“[We go] to art museums [and read] art books,” Halls said. “We’ve got a lot of photography books and art books.”

Bomer added, “We try to select schools for them over the course of their lives that encourage them.”

“All little boys are little hams,” Halls explained. “That’s not a genetic thing. It’s a gender thing.”

In November 2023, Bomer told Forbes how much he loves being a dad.

“I think it’s a joy to hear about their lives and what’s going on with them and be a part of a family. I think that’s an amazing, miraculous thing and I love our boys very much,” he shared.
