Construction expert Fyodor Vasiliev told Lenta.ru that dampness in the basement not only causes discomfort, but also poses a direct threat to the foundation and floors in the house, and if measures are not taken in time, mold, rot and destruction of structures cannot be avoided. The expert told Russians how to remove dampness without dismantling the floor.
If water accumulates regularly and there is no way to dismantle the floor, Vasiliev advises checking the ventilation first. As the publication's interlocutor noted, the basement should be ventilated through vents, and if there are none or they are clogged, then moisture will accumulate. The expert reminded that the vents should be located opposite each other to create a draft, but if they do not help, it is recommended to install forced ventilation - in particular, an exhaust fan with a timer.
Vasiliev named waterproofing of the basement as the second necessary step. The source recommended covering the floor with a thick 200 micron film with an overlap on the walls if the floor is earthen. If there is a concrete screed, but moisture seeps through the seams, the expert advises treating them with penetrating waterproofing.
In addition, the source recommends trying forced dehumidification. He explained that thanks to a compact dehumidifier with a drainage outlet to the sewer and outside, it will be possible to maintain a low level of humidity in the basement.
