A collection of early medieval coins, including the oldest Polish coins minted during the reign of Bolesław I the Brave and Mieszko II Lambert, will be available for viewing from Saturday at an exhibition at the Ossoliński National Institute in Wrocław.
The intimate exhibition is located in the Ossolineum auditorium. It is another presentation of the collections of the Museum of the Princes Lubomirski.
This time, visitors will have the opportunity to see a collection of early medieval coins purchased by the Ossolineum at the end of 2024 thanks to a subsidy from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. These are over 200 objects, including the oldest Polish coins, issued during the reign of Bolesław I the Brave and Mieszko II Lambert - Ossolineum spokeswoman Dr. Katarzyna Uczkiewicz told PAP.
Numismatics related to the reign of Bolesław the Brave are particularly richly represented. Among the 21 coins from this period are denarii with the inscriptions: "BOLIZLAVS DVX INCLITVS" (Bolesław the Famous Prince) and "PRINCES POLONIE" (Prince of Poland). "These small coins perfectly reflect the importance of Prince Bolesław in Europe at that time, as a ruler issuing his own silver coin. His status was confirmed by his coronation in April 1025. It is worth mentioning that it is on the denarii of Bolesław that the name of our country appears in written form for the first time in history," emphasized the creators of the exhibition.
Also presented are, among others, Polish denarii of Bolesław II the Brave, Władysław I Herman, Bolesław III Krzywousty and Władysław II the Exile. You can also see two unique coins of Mieszko II, including one with the inscription "MISICO" - the name of the ruler.
The exhibition also includes the oldest Silesian coins, including a bracteate of Bolesław I the Tall with the inscription "DVX VRATIZ", i.e. the first coin with the name of Wrocław.
The exhibition can be visited until June 1.
The building of the seat of the Princes Lubomirski Museum is being built in Wrocław in close proximity to the Ossolineum. It will be the first post-war museum facility in the capital of Lower Silesia, the building of which will be built from the foundations. The opening of the permanent exhibition is planned there in 2028. The Princes Lubomirski Museum is a branch of the Ossolineum. (PAP)
